70
71
Summary of GDB

72
73
The purpose of a debugger such as GDB is to allow you to see what is
74going on “inside” another program while it executes—or what another
75program was doing at the moment it crashed.
76

77
GDB can do four main kinds of things (plus other things in support of
78these) to help you catch bugs in the act:
79

80

81
Start your program, specifying anything that might affect its behavior.
82
83

Make your program stop on specified conditions.
84
85

Examine what has happened, when your program has stopped.
86
87

Change things in your program, so you can experiment with correcting the
88effects of one bug and go on to learn about another.
89

90
91
You can use GDB to debug programs written in C and C++.
92For more information, see Supported Languages.
93For more information, see C and C++.
94

95
Support for D is partial. For information on D, see
96D.
97

98
99
Support for Modula-2 is partial. For information on Modula-2, see
100Modula-2.
101

102
Support for OpenCL C is partial. For information on OpenCL C, see
103OpenCL C.
104

105
106
Debugging Pascal programs which use sets, subranges, file variables, or
107nested functions does not currently work. GDB does not support
108entering expressions, printing values, or similar features using Pascal
109syntax.
110

111
112
GDB can be used to debug programs written in Fortran, although
113it may be necessary to refer to some variables with a trailing
114underscore.
115

116
GDB can be used to debug programs written in Objective-C,
117using either the Apple/NeXT or the GNU Objective-C runtime.
